A Childhood of Limited Choices
The white noise shushed the ambiance of the morning light illuminating the dust in the air. Flipping the 13-channel knob had only four choices: 3, 11, 22, and 9. The latter was public television; the others were NBC, ABC, and CBS affiliates.
All the other sections were just fuzz. A pshhhhhhhhh with nothing there. So, nine live feeds of hushed snow or four randomized platforms that were developed by the management who were slaves to the ratings.
These were the television choices of my childhood, a rare and elegant hope that something would come to the airwaves that would delight the mind. Yet, often not, there was little to see but that scarcity never kept us from being glued for hours, never touching the set, appreciating every silly jingle, every interaction, and every “boring” idea that was set before us.
We were content and never bored.
Back then, our choices were limited, yet this limitation was a subtle blessing, a hidden guide towards a more focused, intentional way of living. We often confuse abundance with freedom, mistaking the plethora of options as a pathway to greater happiness. But does this deluge of choices truly liberate us?
Psychologically, humans are wired to seek novelty. This desire stems from our innate curiosity and the evolutionary advantage of exploring new territories and ideas. However, in the modern context, this pursuit often leads us down a path of endless consumption, mistaking the acquisition of new experiences and things for personal growth and fulfillment.
The paradox of choice, a concept well-documented in psychological studies, suggests that beyond a certain point, an increase in options does not enhance our freedom but diminishes it. This psychological conundrum resonates deeply with our contemporary dilemma of abundance.
“If I just had the opportunity to do more!”
The Bondage of Abundance
In a world where more is often equated with better, we are incessantly bombarded with choices that promise greater fulfillment. This constant barrage not only distracts us but also depletes our mental energy, leaving less room for creativity and deep, introspective thought that yields a greater harvest, one that engages every aspect of our journey in life, our hopes, dreams, and ambitions. Our minds become cluttered with the noise of endless possibilities, and we lose sight of the beauty and fulfillment that can be found in simplicity and depth.
Balancing the Quest for More with Depth and Meaning
The search for wonder and knowledge is a God-given aspect of the human condition. We are created with an innate desire to explore, to learn, and to grow. Our challenge is to channel this desire towards pursuits that enrich our lives, strengthen our faith, and deepen our relationships, rather than allowing it to lead us into the shallow waters of endless choice.

Finding Freedom in Limitation
While the allure of endless choices and novelty is powerful, true freedom and fulfillment lies in recognizing the limitations of this abundance. By consciously choosing depth over breadth, we can escape the bondage of endless choice and discover the profound joy and contentment that come from a focused, intentional life. This approach allows us to grow in our faith, nurture our relationships, and engage in creative pursuits that truly enrich our lives, reflecting the depth and richness of the life we are called to live.
I am testing different ideas and writing styles and trying diligently to be very clear and succinct. I tend to write more than needed and most of the time I feel like my voice is missing when I produce something like this. As a storyteller, I engage life with a desire to set a fire that either burns slowly into a rested ember of sustenance or explodes into a life-changing blaze. Either way, I encourage feedback, not just on the subject matter, but moreover, on the depth at which my writing hits. As you can see, in this small addendum, I would rather express in colors of ambiguity kindling the spark of confusion that leads to discovery than just say what I mean. Yet, the more I do this for myself, the clearer I can see… what, you say? Well, isn’t that the mystery I’m looking for? Resting. Really resting…
